Elder abuse in long-term care facilities is a growing concern worldwide, including in Nigeria. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in six elderly individuals experience some form of abuse, including physical, emotional, financial, and neglectful treatment (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2024). Long-term care facilities, designed to provide supportive environments for elderly individuals, sometimes become places where they experience mistreatment due to factors such as staff shortages, inadequate training, and systemic neglect (Olawale & Musa, 2023).
Nurses play a critical role in identifying, preventing, and addressing elder abuse in these settings. As primary caregivers, they are responsible for monitoring the well-being of elderly residents, recognizing signs of abuse, and ensuring that ethical standards and patient rights are upheld (Garba & Sanni, 2024). In Kaduna State, where long-term care facilities are still developing, there is limited research on how effectively nurses are preventing and addressing elder abuse.
Despite the growing recognition of elder abuse as a public health issue, many cases remain unreported due to fear, lack of awareness, and institutional barriers. Factors contributing to elder abuse include inadequate staffing, caregiver burnout, poor facility management, and lack of policies protecting elderly residents (Chukwu & Ibrahim, 2023). Understanding the role of nurses in mitigating these issues is crucial for developing strategies to enhance elderly protection in care facilities.
Elder abuse in long-term care facilities remains a significant but often overlooked issue in Kaduna State. Reports suggest that some elderly individuals suffer neglect, emotional abuse, and physical mistreatment due to poor monitoring and ineffective regulatory mechanisms (Williams & Yusuf, 2024). While nurses are expected to play a pivotal role in preventing such abuse, many face challenges such as high patient-to-nurse ratios, lack of institutional support, and insufficient training on elder abuse detection and intervention (Bello & Adeyemi, 2023).
Without effective intervention strategies, elderly individuals in long-term care facilities may continue to suffer abuse, leading to deteriorating health, reduced quality of life, and increased mortality rates. This study investigates the role of nurses in preventing elder abuse in Kaduna State’s long-term care facilities, identifying gaps in practice and suggesting solutions to enhance elderly protection.

This study focuses on nurses working in long-term care facilities in Kaduna State and their role in preventing elder abuse. It examines challenges, institutional factors, and possible interventions. Limitations include underreporting of abuse cases, variations in care facility policies, and reluctance of some respondents to discuss sensitive issues. Findings may not be generalizable to regions with different healthcare systems.
